SONYA Z. MEHTA
Sonya Z. Mehta is a trial and appellate attorney with Siegel & Yee, representing employees, students, labor unions, and community organizations. Sonya is an experienced and committed advocate for workers' rights and social justice.
In September 2015, Sonya won a $613,302 unanimous jury verdict in federal court for a City of Oakland whistleblower employee. 1 More recently, she won an entry of judgment against the City of Richmond for a whistleblower employee. 2
In addition, she has negotiated excellent settlements for employees and students in whistleblower, discrimination, and retaliation cases. She has experience advocating in administrative agency, organizational, and university proceedings.
Sonya graduated from the University of California at Berkeley and received her law degree from the City University of New York (CUNY) School of Law.
Before practicing law, Sonya was the Co-Executive Director of community and workers' organization Young Workers United (YWU) in San Francisco. At YWU, she won the first paid sick leave law in the country through a 2006 San Francisco ballot initiative.
